Start with the right office
Fort Bend Central Appraisal District decides exemption eligibility and accepts exemption applications. Fort Bend County Tax Office handles tax bills and payments. If your question is about whether you qualify or whether an exemption is on the appraisal record, start with FBCAD. If it is about a bill, balance, payment, or collection, start with the Tax Office.
What the age-65 exemption is
Texas provides an additional residence-homestead exemption for qualifying homeowners who are age 65 or older. The Texas Comptroller says an applicant must be at least 65, have an ownership interest in the property, and use the home as a principal residence. The exact effect on a bill depends on the taxing units and exemptions that apply to that property, so this guide does not estimate savings.
Review the Texas Comptroller’s official property-tax exemption overview for statewide eligibility context. FBCAD makes the decision for property in Fort Bend County.
Fulshear homeowner checklist
- Confirm the appraisal district. This guide covers homes in the Fort Bend Central Appraisal District. A Fulshear mailing address alone should not replace checking the property’s county and appraisal record.
- Open FBCAD’s exemption page. Use the district’s Homestead Exemptions page to review current instructions and required documents.
- Prepare Form 50-114. FBCAD lists Form 50-114, Residence Homestead Exemption Application, for the general and age-65-or-older exemptions.
- Check identification before filing. FBCAD currently asks age-65 applicants for a clear copy of a current driver’s license or Texas ID, with the address matching the principal residence. Read the current district instructions for exceptions or additional documentation.
- File through the district’s official route. Go to the FBCAD online exemption application, or contact the district if online filing is not suitable.
- Keep a copy and check the record. Save the completed application and any confirmation. Ask FBCAD about application status or an exemption shown on the appraisal record.
- Check the eventual bill separately. Use the Fort Bend County Property Taxes page for bill, payment, balance, and collection information. Some Fulshear properties may also involve separate taxing units, so read the entities listed on the bill.
Timing and situations that need a direct check
- The Texas Comptroller states that the general exemption-application deadline is before May 1, but late-filing provisions or different effective dates may apply. Ask FBCAD about your tax year instead of assuming you missed every option.
- FBCAD tells surviving spouses to reapply for exemptions for the January following a spouse’s death. Eligibility rules differ by situation, so contact the district before relying on a prior exemption.
- Disability, disabled-veteran, inherited-home, and surviving-spouse exemptions have separate qualifications and documentation. Use the official pages rather than selecting a category by name alone.
